Jon Lord, Deep Purple keyboardist, dies at 71

Lord who co-founded the famous British hard rock band died from a pulmonary embolism after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He died at the London Clinic on Monday, July 16th, surrounded by family. He was 71.

In 1968, Lord founded Deep Purple with bassist Nick Simper, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, drummer Ian Paice and singer Rod Evans. Lord and Paice were the only continual members since the beginning and also after the re-establishment of the band in 1984. He co-wrote many of Deep Purple’s greatest hits including Smoke on the Water. After his retirement from band in 2002, he successfully continued in his solo career.
